About Matthew
Matthew Murphy is the Managing Partner and Co-founder of MMLC, bringing over 25 years of expertise in the China and Asia-Pacific regions, with a particular focus on Intellectual Property, Corporate matters including M&A, Technology, and International Trade. Recognised as a leading figure in corporate, IP, and technology law by various publishers and directories, he also serves as an arbitrator panelist for prestigious institutions such as the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre and many others across the globe. Matthew is a prolific contributor to major journals on Chinese law and technology issues and shares his knowledge through teaching post-graduate courses in international IP and technology law at top universities. His career began as a Judge's Associate in Queensland, followed by a significant role at Freshfields in Hong Kong where he established the China/Asia Pacific IP/IT Group. His varied experience extends to advocacy in Freshfields' Corporate, Dispute Resolution, and China Teams, both in Hong Kong and London. In his pro bono work, Matthew has served as the Honorary Olympic Appeals Consultant for the Australian Olympic Committee and engaged in pivotal research projects for the UNDP, World Justice Project, and World Bank. His contributions focus on enhancing legal aid accessibility and upholding the rule of law. Additionally, he has been appointed to QUT's Graduate School of Business Advisory Board. Matthew earned his Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business from the Queensland University of Technology in 1993 and completed his Master of Laws at the University of Queensland in 1999, with a focus on IP, alongside studies in Chinese commercial law at the University of Hong Kong. He is admitted to practise in Australia, Ireland/EU, England and Wales and holds membership in the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Proficient in Mandarin, Matthew leverages his linguistic skills to support his international legal practice.
