Joplin Higgins

Joplin Higgins is the Director of Joplin Lawyers located in the heart of the Hunter Valley. With a unique journey that began in the tourism and marketing industries, I recognised the profound impact that law can have on society and decided to pivot my career, undertaking a Bachelor of Laws degree at James Cook University in 2001. Since then, my professional mission has centred on advocating for the safety and empowerment of women and children across Australia. Having built Joplin Lawyers from the ground up, I lead a team of dedicated solicitors with a focus on complex Family Law cases, particularly those involving domestic violence. Our firm is passionate about re-framing how domestic violence is perceived and discussed, using our expertise to defend our clients' rights and interests with unwavering support and care. My commitment extends beyond the courtroom, as I work to educate communities about domestic violence through seminars, international speaker events, and group coaching programs. My dedication to social change was recognised in 2016 when I was awarded a Westpac Social Change Research Fellowship, allowing me to further my research in domestic violence redress and study rehabilitation programs in the United States. I have contributed to the field through my research on the Evaluation of Perpetrator programs. Accessibility to justice is a cause close to my heart, particularly in rural and regional areas. I provide outreach services throughout New South Wales, assisting First Nation communities and ensuring that legal representation is not hindered by geographic or financial barriers. Further, as a panel member for the Family Law, Care & Protection, and Independent Children’s Lawyer panels with the Legal Aid Commission of New South Wales, I stand as a steadfast advocate for children and marginalised individuals. My work was recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours list, acknowledging my significant contributions to the field of law.
