About Nick
Nick Stagg is a Co-Founder and Legal Practice Director at Steedman Stagg Lawyers, bringing extensive experience in dispute resolution and commercial law. Prior to launching the firm, Nick was a senior partner in the dispute resolution and litigation team at West Australian law firm Lavan for more than 12 years. He began his legal career with the highly regarded national firm Freehills (and its predecessor, Parker & Parker), where he spent around 15 years refining his technical skills. Nick is recognised for his work in defamation and media law, representing prominent media organisations such as Seven West Media—which includes The West Australian, Sunday Times, various regional newspapers, Community Newspaper Group, online news platforms, and Channel 7. His media clientele has also encompassed Channel Nine, Channel 10, the ABC, and smaller private media entities. Outside media, Nick has acted on behalf of company directors in board take-over situations, high-profile business figures, politicians (including a Premier and Ministers), professionals such as doctors and lawyers, sports personalities, charities and not-for-profits, private educational institutions, universities, and individuals navigating challenges arising in online and social media contexts. In addition to media law, Nick has extensive experience in the hard rock mining sector. He has advised listed and major mining companies, mining entrepreneurs, investors, insolvency practitioners acting as external controllers of distressed entities, private landowners, as well as environmental and community groups. His mining-related work has involved disputes in the Wardens Courts and the Supreme Court of Western Australia, covering issues such as mining tenement applications and disputes, compliance with statutory mining expenditure, tenement forfeiture, caveat matters, compensation claims, mining royalty and access agreements, and disagreements among joint venturers. Nick’s background with large firms has equipped him to lead significant commercial disputes and litigation matters beyond defamation, representing corporate clients across mining, oil and gas, government statutory corporations, company directors, investors, and shareholders. His expertise extends to regulator investigations, inquiries, Royal Commissions, and administrative law including Freedom of Information and privacy matters. Known for his dedication and practical approach, Nick combines deep legal knowledge with a people-focused style, consistently aiming to achieve the best outcomes for his clients.
