Prakash Raniga

Prakash is a Principal of the firm with over 32 years of legal practice in Melbourne. He graduated with degrees in Arts and Law from Melbourne University in 1983 and was admitted to practise in Victoria in 1984 following his Practical Legal Training at Leo Cussens. After a brief period practising law in Fiji, where he was also admitted, Prakash returned to Melbourne in 1986. He joined Rossi, Ryan and Collins before becoming a partner in 1998, leading to the firm being renamed Rossi Ryan & Raniga. With extensive experience spanning more than three decades, Prakash handles a broad range of matters in the Family Court and Federal Circuit Court, including complex children’s disputes and high-value property cases. Beyond family law, his work encompasses civil litigation across various jurisdictions such as the Magistrates’ Court, County Court, Supreme Court, Federal Court, and VCAT. His civil law experience includes commercial disputes, debt recovery, building disputes, unfair dismissal claims, employment disputes, and proceedings before the Fair Work Commission. Prakash has also successfully managed appeals from VCAT decisions in both the Building and General Civil Lists. In addition to litigation, Prakash advises on commercial contracts and has participated in the sale and purchase of businesses and conveyancing matters. Throughout his tenure as a partner and principal, he has played a key role in mentoring and supervising junior lawyers, which has broadened the scope of services the firm offers. He and his team have developed strong professional relationships with barristers across various legal fields to ensure effective outcomes for clients. The firm also provides legal assistance in criminal law matters, primarily handling summary offences in the Magistrates’ Court. This includes negotiating with police prosecutors to reduce charges and seeking diversions or withdrawals where appropriate.
