Karen Katz

Karen graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Laws and was admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor in 1991. Since joining Rickards Legal in 2008, she has built extensive experience across a broad range of commercial litigation matters. Karen’s work encompasses large, complex commercial disputes as well as areas such as estate litigation, commercial leasing, family law, deceased estates and property law. Her client base spans small businesses and individuals, and she is recognised for her clear communication and practical approach. Karen focuses on providing advice that is tailored to the specific circumstances of each client, helping them to understand their options and work towards the most favourable outcomes. Karen’s practice areas include litigation and dispute resolution, negotiation, mediations and alternative dispute resolution processes. She has experience in debt collection and defence, commercial disputes, bankruptcy proceedings and personal insolvency arrangements. Her work also covers family law matters, including all legal advice and proceedings related to marriage and de facto relationships. In the area of estates, Karen drafts Wills and Powers of Attorney, assists with probate and administration of deceased estates, and handles claims related to the maintenance of family members under a Will, as well as disputes involving undue influence or lack of capacity. She also advises on elder law matters, nursing home agreements, and guardianship applications including representation at VCAT. Karen’s property law experience includes commercial and retail leases, conveyancing transactions such as sales and purchases, land transfers, and related applications including those for stamp duty exemptions. Additionally, she provides advice on bank loan documentation, guarantees and prepares solicitor’s certificates where required. With her broad expertise and client-focused approach, Karen is equipped to offer sound, practical advice across a wide array of legal issues.
