About Deanne

Deanne Drummond is a seasoned family law practitioner with over 25 years of experience, based in Cairns. As a long-term resident and mother of two, she brings a compassionate and informed approach to her work in family and de facto law. Deanne is committed to explaining clients’ rights and obligations in clear terms, ensuring they understand all available options to make informed decisions. Her dedication to high-quality service and professional excellence has earned her recognition as a pre-eminent lawyer in family and divorce law across North and Central Queensland, as noted in Doyle’s Guide. Deanne’s practice is shaped by her advocacy for trauma-informed approaches. She holds certifications in functional medicine and trauma, and is a member of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, reflecting her deep understanding of the impact trauma can have on clients. Deanne’s commitment to children’s rights is evident from her role in the first family law case on traditional adoption held on Thursday Island. She shared her expertise at the 6th World Congress on Family Law and Children’s Rights in Sydney in 2013, presenting on Kupai Omasker and the integration of traditional adoption practices within Australia’s family law framework. In addition to her practice, Deanne has contributed to legal education as a former family law lecturer at James Cook University. She also served as a Sessional Member of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal in the Human Rights Division. Her involvement in the legal community extends to regular presentations at conferences nationwide and her recognition as a life member of the North Queensland Law Association in 2019, acknowledging her longstanding contributions. Deanne’s experience includes work as a mediator and independent children’s lawyer, roles that have enriched her capacity to navigate complex family matters with sensitivity. She is a qualified Collaborative Lawyer and active member of the Queensland Association of Collaborative Practitioners, advocating for collaborative processes to achieve personalised solutions that often avoid the need for court proceedings. In 2020, Deanne co-founded TREE House Australia Pty Ltd, a not-for-profit dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by trauma. Through education and collaboration with service providers, TREE House Australia promotes trauma-informed practice, aiming to enhance health and behavioural outcomes for clients. The organisation’s name stands for Trauma, Recognition, Education and Evolution, summarising its mission to effect positive change in the community.
