Matt Patterson

Matt is a seasoned legal practitioner with over 25 years of experience practising in native title, coal seam gas (CSG), mining, renewables, planning, and environment law. He is based in P&E Law’s Maroochydore office, where he leads the firm's Coal Seam Gas and Mining team and has served as a Director for over 13 years. Matt possesses in-depth expertise across local, State, and Commonwealth planning and environment law. His extensive legal acumen includes handling cases in the Planning and Environment Court, the Federal Court, and the Land Court. Matt is proficient in navigating various aspects of planning and development, including renewable energy projects, land acquisition, carbon agreements, vegetation, and the management of mining, water, and protected areas. His representation of landholders has involved transactions related to large-scale CSG and mining developments, including agreements for the sale of gas and water, water make good arrangements, and substantial renewable energy projects. In the arena of native title, Matt has acted on behalf of numerous native title groups across Australia, providing comprehensive advice on native title and cultural heritage matters, including Future Act agreements. His experience encompasses handling Federal Court native title and compensation proceedings, negotiating agreements across mining, renewables, and carbon sectors, and drafting Indigenous Land Use Agreements for infrastructure. Recognised by Doyle’s Guide for several years, Matt is acknowledged for his proficiency as a leading native title lawyer representing traditional owners nationwide. Outside of his legal pursuits, Matt enjoys travelling, beach trips, indulging in music, and cherishing time with his family.
