Melanie Vairawanathan

Melanie Vairawanathan is the Founder and Principal Lawyer of Melmark Law, bringing a nationally recognised presence in family law. With numerous accolades, including the 2025 Australian Law Awards Sole Practitioner of the Year and multiple AusMumpreneur Awards, Melanie has established a practice that prioritises values, trauma-informed care, and inclusivity. As one of the few lawyers qualified in collaborative family law in Melbourne, she actively contributes to the Australian Association of Collaborative Professionals and the Victorian Association of Collaborative Professionals. Her approach focuses on guiding families through respectful and constructive conflict resolution, aiming to avoid court proceedings wherever possible. Melanie’s background as a first-generation immigrant and parent informs her commitment to making legal services more accessible, humane, and empowering. She holds a Master of Laws (Applied Law) with a focus on family law, combining technical proficiency with emotional insight in her work. Her areas of practice include family law, family violence, wills and estate planning, and collaborative law. Melanie supports clients from diverse backgrounds, including women, LGBTQI+ individuals, and culturally diverse families, navigating complex legal matters with compassion and clarity. Recognised for her leadership and advocacy, Melanie has been featured in Lawyers Weekly, national podcasts, and legal media, contributing to discussions on equity, justice, and the modernisation of legal practice. She has served a three-year tenure with the College of Law and volunteers with the Fitzroy Legal Service Night Program. Additionally, she advocates for diversity and inclusion within the legal profession. Melanie is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria, the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, Victorian Women Lawyers, and the Australian Association of Collaborative Professionals.
