About James
James Howell is a Senior Associate at McAneny Lawyers, where he focuses exclusively on criminal law and criminal defence litigation. With accreditation from the Law Society of NSW as a criminal law practitioner, James brings a high level of expertise to all aspects of criminal litigation. His experience spans multiple court levels, including conducting Supreme Court bail applications, District Court sentence hearings and appeals, and preparing for complex trials in both the District and Supreme Courts. James also regularly handles matters in the Court of Criminal Appeal, as well as Local and Children’s Courts, covering defended hearings, sentence proceedings and traffic-related cases. He is available to advise and consult with clients who are in custody or on remand at metropolitan and regional correctional facilities. James is frequently called upon to represent clients in regional areas and interstate, and he is approved by the Legal Aid Commission of New South Wales for matters in General Crime, Children’s Court Crime, Indictable Crime and Serious and Complex Crime. He is committed to providing Legal Aid services and actively contributes to the legal community through volunteer work with the NSW Law Society Mock Trial Competition and the University of Wollongong Advocacy program. James is also involved in offering pro bono assistance to disadvantaged individuals. Throughout his career, James has gained significant experience working alongside some of Australia’s leading criminal barristers and has been involved in numerous high-profile cases. Outside of his legal practice, James enjoys surfing the waves along the Illawarra and South Coast, as well as snowboarding in Australia, Japan and other locations.
