Mal Ryan & Glen has been a pillar of the Mansfield community for over a century. Founded in 1921 by Malachy Ryan, who acquired the practice of Michael Francis Bourke, the firm has grown alongside the township, maintaining close ties to the local community throughout its development. Malachy Ryan’s dedication and legal acumen earned him a distinguished reputation in the High Country, where he practised as a sole solicitor for nearly two decades before expanding by acquiring another local practice in 1939. The firm’s growth continued in the late 1940s when William Henderson Glen was introduced through a Melbourne-based firm’s regional expansion efforts. A fortuitous meeting between Malachy Ryan and Bill Glen led to the merging of their practices and the creation of Mal Ryan & Glen, marking the beginning of a longstanding partnership rooted in shared values and community service. Following Malachy Ryan’s passing in 1959, his son Rodney returned to Mansfield to carry on the firm’s legacy, combining his passion for law with a commitment to the region’s growth. Rodney, alongside Bill Glen, steered the firm through prosperous times. After decades of service, Rodney transitioned to a consultant role before retiring in 2016, having helped nurture the firm’s reputation for dependable legal advice and strong community links. David Parsons, a local Mansfield graduate who completed his clerkship with the firm, later joined as a partner and led the practice through the early 2000s. In 2013, Katie Lockey, who had been practising with Mal Ryan & Glen, took ownership. Under her guidance, the firm continues to focus on key legal areas such as wills and estate planning, probate, property conveyancing, and business sales and purchases, reflecting its ongoing dedication to supporting individuals and families across the High Country. Mal Ryan & Glen’s enduring commitment to the community extends beyond legal services. The firm actively sponsors numerous local events and organisations including the Mansfield, Alexandra, and Yea Shows, Mansfield Grand Parade, Women in the North East Network, and several cultural and sporting initiatives. This engagement underscores the firm’s belief in fostering strong community ties and contributing meaningfully to the region it has served for more than 100 years.
