About Michael
Michael Hutton is a partner with extensive experience advising builders on contracts and documentation. He is well-regarded within the building industry, frequently delivering lectures to builders on legal matters and participating in several committees at the Housing Industry Association. Over the course of his career, Michael has established himself as a trusted advisor to many of South Australia’s leading builders. In the legal community, Michael is recognised for his advocacy skills and expertise. The June 2008 Australian Legal Business survey described him as an “eloquent and talented litigator.” His achievements include being named Infrastructure Lawyer of the Year in South Australia by The Lawyer Network in 2023. Additionally, he was honoured as Lawyer of the Year for Construction and Infrastructure Law in Adelaide by Best Lawyers in Australia in 2019, and has been continuously listed in their Construction/Infrastructure Law category for over a decade. Michael’s expertise is further acknowledged through his national recommendation in Doyle’s Guide 2024 as one of Australia’s leading Construction and Infrastructure Litigation Lawyers, and he is one of only two Adelaide lawyers included. Doyle’s Guide has also consecutively named him a Preeminent Leading Construction and Infrastructure Litigation Lawyer in South Australia since 2017, as well as a Leading Front End Construction and Infrastructure Lawyer since the same year. Beyond construction and infrastructure, Michael works in intellectual property, information technology and technology law. Doyle’s Guide recognised him in 2016 as a Leading Technology, Media and Telecommunications lawyer. He advises clients ranging from end users to originators of intellectual property and technology, supporting matters including development agreements, licensing transactions, transfers and registration of rights. Michael also represents clients in litigation concerning technology disputes. Michael has significant experience in trade practices law, where he assists clients with compliance training and legal advice. His commercial litigation practice complements these areas. Areas of practice include construction, infrastructure and engineering; intellectual property, information technology and biotechnology; trade practices; and commercial litigation.
