James King

James King is the Principal Lawyer of Legitimate Solutions Legal and Managing Director of Legitimate Solutions Pty Ltd. He brings together comprehensive legal expertise with strong management skills, commercial insight, and a deep understanding of government operations. James has extensive experience in the energy utilities sector, focusing on legal compliance and fulfilling In House Counsel duties. Early in his career, he practised across a broad range of legal areas including native title, commercial litigation, property, employment, insurance litigation, and corporate and commercial law. His practice also provided exposure to family, criminal, administrative, and immigration law, enriching his multidisciplinary approach. Throughout his career, James has undertaken consulting engagements that involved researching, developing, drafting, and implementing manuals, policies, and plans. His work includes creating safety and operating protocols, customer contracts, customer charters, and various commercial documents, supporting effective organisational operations. He played a pivotal role in establishing the legal counsel office for a major energy company, implementing legal risk management strategies, selecting and managing panels of legal firms under service level agreements, and advising senior management and the Board on complex legal matters. James is recognised for his expertise in legal compliance and in house legal counsel, often invited to present papers at industry conferences. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, James immigrated to Western Australia with his family in 1977. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in politics and industrial relations from the University of Western Australia. Prior to his legal studies, he worked in a Western Australian state government Minister’s office, handling electorate and ministerial issues across health, police and emergency services, as well as conservation and land management sectors. James pursued legal studies at the Australian National University, completing a Bachelor of Laws (Graduate) (Honours) and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. He further enhanced his management capabilities by obtaining a Master of Business Administration (Executive) from the Australian Graduate School of Management. He also holds a Graduate Diploma in Military Law from ANU and is currently completing a Master of Military Law. James serves as a Legal Officer in the Navy Reserve, reflecting his commitment to public service.
