John Gunson

John Gunson is an experienced lawyer with a career spanning over four decades. He holds a Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws from Monash University and earned his Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne. Since beginning practice in 1983, John has appeared in numerous courts, including those in New South Wales and Victoria, as well as the High Court of Australia, Family Court of Australia, and Federal Circuit Court of Australia. His work primarily involves court and mediation proceedings across a range of areas such as insurance claims, compensation, medical law, family law matters for de facto and married couples, and disputes over property division. John also assists with agreements related to relationship property, superannuation and disability claims, wills and estates, and powers of attorney including enduring and medical guardianships. He has particular experience managing court claims regarding deceased estates, including family provision claims. John’s commitment to justice extends beyond the courtroom. He has contributed to Indigenous justice initiatives as a committee member for the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration’s Indigenous justice committee and participated in organising significant Indigenous justice conferences. Additionally, he provides pro bono legal support to East Timorese university students in Australia and serves as honorary legal advisor to the Honorary Consulate General for East Timor in Victoria and to the Alola Foundation in Dili, East Timor. He is also a board member of the Fundasaun Fitun Ki’ik. He is a published author on medical negligence law, reflecting his thorough understanding of this complex area. John's extensive litigation experience and dedication to mediation provide clients with well-rounded representation across a broad spectrum of legal matters.
