About Shun
Mr Shun Cheng is the Founder and Principal of CS Lawyers and holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Laws from Liaoning University, China, as well as a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Queensland. Prior to relocating to Australia in 1998, Shun lectured at Liaoning University’s Law School for three years, contributing to legal education in China. Since his graduation from the University of Queensland in 2002, Shun has gained extensive experience working with a range of Australian law firms, including two leading firms, where he has provided legal advice to clients across diverse sectors such as energy, mining, government, pharmaceuticals, construction, clothing and business consulting. Shun’s practice encompasses advising both Australian and Chinese clients on cross-border business matters. He has assisted Chinese investors with acquiring interests and establishing appropriate structures within Australia to support their operations. Conversely, he has guided Australian clients in setting up joint ventures and other commercial enterprises in China, demonstrating his capability to navigate legal landscapes in both jurisdictions. With significant involvement in litigation and dispute resolution, Shun has successfully represented clients in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the Federal Court of Australia. Notably, in 2009, he facilitated the enforcement of an arbitral award from the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, underscoring his adeptness in cross-border dispute resolution. His litigation experience equips him to assist clients in pre-empting and managing potential disputes effectively. As one of the earliest Chinese-born and educated solicitors admitted to practise in Australia, Shun combines a robust understanding of both Australian and Chinese legal systems with deep cultural insight. This unique perspective enables him to bridge cultural differences and guide Chinese corporate and individual investors towards successful ventures in Australia. In addition to his legal career, Shun has served as a director of a non-profit organisation for over seven years, reflecting his commitment to community engagement. He is admitted to practise in the High Court of Australia and the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
