Clayton James

Clayton James has been practising law since 1972, bringing over five decades of experience to his clients. He became a partner in a mid-sized Sydney firm in 1979, where he handled a diverse range of matters including conveyancing, commercial litigation, equity, estate work, personal injury claims, and firm management. During this period, he managed a staff of 16 and oversaw operations in both the city and suburban offices. In 1992, Clayton relocated with his family to the Far North Coast between Lismore and Casino, motivated by family health considerations. Beyond his legal career, he has been actively involved in sport as both a player and administrator, notably serving as chairman of the Far North Coast Judiciary for over ten years. Clayton’s sporting interests extend to coaching rugby union teams and engaging in activities such as surfing, fishing, kayaking, and skiing. Clayton has also ventured into agriculture, owning and managing a macadamia farm and a stud cattle enterprise, achieving prestigious awards including Supreme of Show at Rockhampton and Supreme Champion Bull and Cow in Sydney. His community involvement is extensive, having volunteered as a ring steward at local shows for 15 years and played a key role in reviving Casino Beef Week, the region’s flagship event. Legally, Clayton is known for his straightforward, common-sense approach. He has handled a range of complex and unique cases, including successfully suing a sovereign country for civil wrongdoing within New South Wales, and securing the maximum compensation under the NSW Motor Vehicle Act for a young client. His growing practice includes will disputes, often representing claimants across state borders, reflecting his dedication to achieving favourable outcomes and quality service. His primary areas of practice encompass conveyancing, wills and estates, family and commercial law, accident compensation, and general legal matters.
