Stuart Unwin is a partner with nearly two decades of experience focused on providing clear, pragmatic legal advice and tailored solutions to his clients. Stuart has acted for a diverse range of clients including Queensland’s primary workers’ compensation insurer and numerous insured and self-insured employers. He also advises corporations on property and injury disputes, healthcare, educational and religious institutions, law enforcement and emergency services agencies, professionals facing civil or disciplinary action, and general and professional indemnity insurers. With significant expertise in managing psychiatric injury, bullying claims and historical institutional abuse matters, Stuart aims to resolve most claims without litigation. Nonetheless, he is an experienced litigator and has successfully defended various claims, including high-profile decisions that have clarified important legal principles in Queensland and other jurisdictions. Examples of his court appearances include cases involving workers’ compensation, psychiatric injury claims, limitation period extensions, and complex contribution proceedings. His handling of cross-border jurisdiction issues has provided leading authority on contentious points of law. Beyond his legal practice, Stuart is dedicated to mentoring junior lawyers and contributes to regulatory committees, including one overseeing dental regulation in Queensland. He has volunteered extensively with community legal services, demonstrating his commitment to access to justice. Stuart was admitted to the Supreme Court of Queensland in 2000. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws with a commercial law focus. Since joining the firm in 2019, he has also contributed to respected external publications such as the QLD Law Handbook, covering contracts, money, property and insurance matters. He is a member of the Queensland Law Society and continues to build on his broad experience to provide considered and effective legal guidance tailored to his clients’ needs.
