About Derek
Derek Butler is a founding partner at Bell Dixon Butler, with a distinguished career spanning estate law and litigation, property, and commercial law. As a Notary Public, Derek provides clients with candid, straightforward advice, helping them avoid unfavourable legal decisions through his methodical problem-solving and keen attention to detail. Originally from Scotland, Derek grew up in regional Queensland, fostering a strong appreciation for country communities and their values. After completing his law degree, he began practising in a major Brisbane firm before gaining international experience as a merchant banker in Scotland. Upon returning to Australia, Derek practised commercial and property law on the Gold Coast, managing significant files for leading land developers. Since relocating to Hervey Bay in 1990, Derek has built a deep understanding of the local property and commercial markets. His extensive network of contacts and comprehensive knowledge make him a trusted legal advisor across the Fraser Coast. In 1994, he became partner at Bell Dixon Butler, where his approach reflects the firm’s commitment to honesty, client-focused service, and efficient resolution of issues. Derek has also contributed as honorary solicitor to numerous not-for-profit and charitable organisations in the region. Outside of his legal work, he is passionate about aviation, British cars, and classic motorcycles, maintaining a collection of model aircraft and a fully restored 1974 Triumph Stag. He values the lifestyle and community of Hervey Bay, choosing to live and practise there to remain connected to the region he serves.
