Ellie Sumner

Ellie Sumner is a solicitor at Bale Boshev, having joined the firm in 2020. Originally from Cessnock, she has established herself in Newcastle over the past four years, bringing a strong connection to the local community. Ellie began her legal journey as a volunteer at a community legal centre in Armidale while completing her studies. She gained broad experience in family law, workers’ compensation, and personal injury matters in the Tamworth and Newcastle regions during her early career. This diverse background has equipped her with a well-rounded understanding of the legal challenges clients face in these areas. In her practice, Ellie approaches each matter with practical insight, objectivity and empathy. She is recognised for her dedication and effectiveness, consistently delivering successful outcomes for her clients. Ellie’s knowledge encompasses both pre- and post-2021 family law legislation, providing clients with informed guidance across the changing legal landscape. Ellie regularly represents clients in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia across Divisions 1 and 2, handling complex property and parenting disputes. Admitted to practise in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia, she is experienced in appearances before Registrars and Judges, as well as in conciliation conferences, mediations and arbitrations. This experience has honed her negotiation skills and advocacy on behalf of her clients. Her expertise includes complex financial property disputes, issues surrounding non-disclosure of financial information, detailed review of financial disclosures, parenting cases involving alcohol and drug abuse, binding financial agreements and consent orders. Ellie is particularly committed to supporting young people in kinship and foster care affected by parental substance abuse, actively participating in foundations that promote their achievements despite adversity. Outside of her legal work, Ellie enjoys football, travel and adventurous activities such as great white shark cage diving. She also appreciates a good coffee, favouring a classic vanilla latte.
